Expedition Log: LEAP Headwaters
Route: Richmond Gulf & East Side of Hudson Bay
Landscape: Arctic Tundra, 420m Cliffs, & Massive Natural Lakes
Guides: Miles, Erica, & Duncan
The Trip Recap: To the Edge of the Bay
This session, the LEAP section undertook one of the most ambitious routes in the North, traveling to the Richmond Gulf on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay. The journey was defined by scale—paddling through Clearwater Lake, the second-largest natural lake in Quebec, and witnessing the freshwater seals of Little Seal and Big Seal Lakes.
The “glory” of this trip was earned in the early hours. We often rose in the dark, headlamps glowing, to catch the water at its calmest. Seeing the sun rise over the tundra from the seat of a canoe is a memory that will stay with this crew forever. The most iconic moment, however, was our first glimpse of the Gulf. After a 25km stretch of rapids, we hiked up a ridge to see the Hudson Bay opening up before us, framed by cliffs that shoot 420 meters straight into the sky. Whether we were navigating the “train track” sections of rapids or singing the unofficial “Richmond Gulf or Bust” anthems, this group proved that they have the stamina and the spirit for the most legendary of expeditions.
To Pete
Pete, you were the section’s “Heart and Candy Distributor.” Your generosity—making sure everyone had a Jolly Rancher or a sweet treat when things got tough—kept spirits high across every kilometer. We were so impressed by your resilience; your refusal to take breaks or give up during the most exhausting days showed incredible character. The bond you formed with Elliot, taking him under your wing as a first-year camper, was a beautiful example of mentorship on the trail.
To Jasmine
Jasmine, your growth over these seven weeks was remarkable. You tackled the massive crossings of Clearwater Lake with a steady hand and a calm focus. Your ability to find the beauty in the small things, even during the long “headlamp starts,” made you a calming presence in the fleet. You’ve mastered the art of long-distance travel, and your strength on the portage trail was a massive asset to the group.
To Hannah
Hannah, you brought a sophisticated and determined energy to the LEAP section. You moved through the tundra landscapes with a natural grace, handling the wind and the waves of the big lakes like a seasoned pro. Your contributions to the group’s morale during the high-cliff sections of the Richmond Gulf proved that you are a true Headwaters tripper.
To Theo
Theo, your technical skills and your “never-quit” attitude were essential to our success. Whether we were scouting technical rapids or navigating the open reaches of the Bay, you approached every challenge with a level head and a strong paddle. You’ve become a leader on the water, and your growth as a woodsman this summer was evident to all the guides.
To Adrian
Adrian, your endurance was legendary this summer. You handled the “grit” of the seven-week schedule with a positive attitude that never wavered. Watching you summit the ridges above the Gulf to look out at the Hudson Bay was a highlight for us—you earned every bit of that view through hard work and dedication.
To Nils
Nils, your international perspective and your steady strength made you a vital part of the LEAP family. You adapted to the rugged terrain of the Quebec tundra with ease, and your ability to stay focused during the early morning paddles helped keep the whole section on track. You lead with a quiet confidence that your teammates truly respected.
