Tripping
Canoe tripping is the core activity at Camp Temagami, and every group takes trips matched to its' age and experience. Campers of all ages are fully involved in the entire process of tripping, from planning and packing to cooking and sharing in campsite jobs. While all campers share the same equipment and participate in the same program, each group sets its' own goals and agenda within the overall camp framework. Our guides tailor the experience of each section to meet the unique needs of girls and boys at all ages. We continue to run separate trips for female and male campers because their requirements are similar but different. As campers gain experience, they have opportunities to take on appropriate levels of responsibility and leadership.
Our youngest campers take short trips close to our base camp on Lake Temagami. In a two-week session, these groups usually take an overnight trip followed by a five-day excursion. A selection of equipment sized for younger campers allows them to take on meaningful roles as they learn canoe-tripping basics and how to live comfortably away from home.
Older campers take advantage of the tripping options available in the Temagami region as a whole. Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Park, the Sturgeon River, and Chiniguchi are some of the beautiful areas within reach of sections travelling to and from our base camp. These longer sessions experience the best of what Temagami has to offer: rugged, spectacular scenery, varied lake, stream, and river travel, excellent fishing and wildlife viewing, historic sites, and an uninterrupted outdoor experience. The variety of the Temagami landscape accommodates the goals of virtually any group, and most of our sections stay within the area.
Each year a small number of Camp Temagami trips start and finish outside the region. The trips tend to be more remote and include river travel and moving water. (Note that additional transportation costs for these trips are reflected in the Fee Schedule.) In past summers, rivers such as the Spanish and Mississagi have provided introductions for longer excursions.
Older Camp Temagami sections have also paddled many of the rivers of the Ottawa Valley as well as the Arctic watershed in Ontario (such as the Albany and Winisk). We have recently expanded our range to include central Labrador, where caribou and barren-topped hills complement a truly remote wilderness experience.
