Program Description: This week-long program will give you a primer on the forests of the Temagami region and how they have been utilized for industrial and recreational purposes. Included in the discussion will be an overview of current forest management practices and their impact in the various parks and reserves that have been created and supplemented over the years.
We will visit some old growth stands of pine, areas that have been harvested and on which regeneration is underway, and (weather permitting) a current harvesting operation. Each site visit will provide the basis for identification of tree species in the Temagami region and an overview of forest succession.
These field trips will be supplemented by formal presentations from camp staff who use the Temagami area for wilderness travel and by professional forest managers and operators. A member of the native community on Bear Island will give a first nations perspective on land use and forestry activities.
The group will stay each evening at Camp Temagami and take day outings to the various field sites by canoe, camp barge or van, depending on the site. There will also be plenty of down time to read, write, reflect, paddle or converse with other people in the program or at Camp Temagami.
Program Co-ordinator:
The program will be co-ordinated by Hugh Stewart, one of the owners of Camp Temagami, who first came to Temagami in 1959 and has since then developed an intimate knowledge of the region as a canoe-tripping guide for over 40 years and as a forest technician. Hugh was very active in the campaign that resulted in the creation of the Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Wilderness Park. In addition, Hugh is a canoe builder and supplies and maintains Camp Temagami's fleet of wood-canvass canoes.
